Gender Links,
an NGO that assists victims of domestic violence
Gender Links is concerned with the welfare of victims of domestic violence. The Saint Pierre-
based NGO has been active in
Mauritius since 2005. We met the president, Anushka Virahsawmy to learn more about their activities.
What is your primary purpose?
We do a lot of advocacy, training and research on gender equality and gender-based violence. We have noticed that the woman is often the victim and this has a considerable impact on the family but also
on the children. There is much that remains to be done in terms of mentoring and raising awareness. We focus essentially on three areas with the local authorities: Gender Governance, Gender Justice and Gender in the Media.
What have been your greatest achievements since the association was founded?
Safe Haven is our greatest source of pride. This transitional housing facility located near the Saint Pierre Church was set up in September 2017. Through this project, we give shelter to teens from the Rehabilitation Youth Centre (RYC) and help empower them. We also welcome women suffering from domestic violence with their children for a period of one year or more (unlike other shelters). We ensure that victims are properly equipped, both emotionally and financially, before they go out on their own.
Is art a way to support your cause, like the Unravel exhibition in September 2020?
Unravel was an extraordinary event! Galerie du Génie in Port Louis has screened from 19 to 29 September 2020 a short film about the story of a woman’s journey through a traumatic experience, inspired by a true story. The screening was followed
by dialogues and discussions in order to raise awareness and sensitise the public. This was the first time we worked with artists who have also experienced violence. Art therapy is definitely something we must incorporate into our activities! It is an effective way to help victims of violence externalise their feelings and rebuild their lives.
What are your objectives for the next five years?
We want to expand our collaboration with the District Councils, use all possible means to enable women
to be heard and review the policy of private sector organisations regarding gender streaming. We also want to continue our Safe Haven project and have
a home. We are currently renting and would like to have our own space. We are therefore calling on local collectives and people who could sell us a plot of land that fits into our budget. We welcome any help.
Why did you move to Saint Pierre?
We chose Saint Pierre for its convenience and accessibility. Being located in the heart of the island makes it is easier to reach the national territory. The rent is also very affordable.
