FoodWise associations advocates a no-waste philosophy!
FoodWise was set up in November 2018 to combat food waste and insecurity in Mauritius. Huge amounts of food are thrown away every day
by the food industry and this Moka- based company is determined to make a difference.
Surplus food, products that are close to expiry date and unsold food, including non-perishables, fruit, vegetables, dairy products and ready-to-eat meals are collected and redistributed to needy people. This initiative brings together 145 stakeholders in the food supply chain, such as supermarkets, hotels, restaurants and wholesalers.
The organisation redirects the food to over 100 NGOs that support vulnerable or disable people, the elderly and abused women, to bring them financial and moral relief.
The food industry’s carbon footprint is also decreased by limiting food waste.
“In the future, we want to improve our efficiency and transparency with regard to the use of donations, whether financial or in kind. Our priorities also include becoming a financially self-sufficient social enterprise and raising awareness of the food waste issue,” says the Managing Director of FoodWise, Rebecca Espitalier-Noël.
Moka Smart City actively contributes to this charitable initiative by donating food leftovers from its events, such as the Moka Trail. FoodWise has actually chosen Moka as the place to celebrate its 1 millionth meal milestone. It also made perfect sense for Oficea to offer them complimentary use of the Piazza at
Vivéa Business Park to mark the occasion. P
