Waste collection
We-Recycle is based in Saint Pierre and mainly collects waste in the Black River and Savanne districts, with two trucks picking up plastic and aluminium cans on a daily basis. To date, around 40 bins have been installed on the west coast and 50 others in the South of the island. This service is provided free of charge through donations received by the NGO and a paid collection service is also available for companies across the country.
Raising public awareness
Another priority for We-Recycle is to raise awareness among the population through interventions in schools and businesses, among others. Since the launch of these initiatives, 3,400 primary schoolchildren have been reached and several private companies have called on the association’s expertise to raise their employees’ awareness of recycling. In the near future, the aim is
to extend the programme to secondary schools and reach an increasing number of private companies. The organisation’s team is supported by employees from Ecovadis who volunteer to carry out interventions in companies.
In addition to awareness-raising sessions in schools and businesses, We-Recycle is also active in communities. The NGO teams up with local stakeholders for door-to- door canvassing, leaflet distribution and waste collection sessions. “This year, two clean-up campaigns have been
organised with children in La Valette, Bambous, as well as information sessions with local residents to set up
a group in charge of monitoring plastic waste on site,” says Stephanie Jacquin, Senior Projects and Operations Officer at We-Recycle.
