#sovnoulagon, a solidarity effort in Moka to save our lagoon
X From 8 to 14 August, hundreds of Mauritians gathered at Bagatelle Mall to produce around
3 km of booms in response to an initiative by the Moka’mwad collective. The aim was to help curb
the oil spill in the south-east lagoon following the wreck
of the bulk carrier, MV Wakashio. While some volunteers were manually collecting sugarcane straw at Bar Le Duc, others were busy making floating booms in the mall’s yard. The quality control was coordinated by field workers and specialist NGOs as well as Ketty Lim Ka Lan from Moka’mwad, Bénédicte de Comarmond from ENL Property and partners like Diane and Jason Colimalay and ENL Foundation. Once ready, the booms were transported to Bois des Amourettes and used to protect the mangroves and coves affected
by the oil spill, among others. This was achieved through the unrelenting efforts of NGOs, specialists and the Mauritians involved.
A huge thank you to all those who contributed to making this operation a success, especially ENL and Alteo for the sugarcane straw, Velogic and FedEX for the logistics and all Bagatelle Mall’s tenants who lent their support by offering free meals to the volunteers. P
