  When sustainability meets technology
For Moka Smart City, building
a sustainable city gets even more exciting when technology comes into play. And for a
very simple reason: it enables us to design more virtuous consumption patterns while working towards our well- being and safety. Here are 3 examples.
Smart sensors to monitor energy consumption
Amenities like water, TV sets, household appliances and air conditioning use large amounts
of energy, draining both our
wallets and the planet! Through smart sensors connected to an IoT platform, Moka is enabling residents to monitor their energy use in
real time and make any necessary adjustments; they can even compare their consumption with the average for other households.
The city can also use these sensors to analyse air quality, light levels, noise levels in neighbourhoods, wastewater treatment and the fill rate of waste sorting bins. Other data will soon be available for analysis, such as photovoltaic energy production and smart public lighting. The aim is to reduce the carbon footprint of the city and its residents.
Solar panels to power the city with green energy
Moka believes in the potential
of renewable energies and aims
to eventually use them to meet 100% of the city’s requirements. To achieve this, the city is equipping itself with a 4-megawatt peak solar farm, with the aim of covering 100% of the energy needs of common spaces. In parallel, Bagatelle
Mall now has the largest rooftop photovoltaic farm in the Indian Ocean islands. Impressive, isn’t it?
Smart cameras to enhance community welfare
Far from the idea of Big Brother watching us, technology also offers effective applications to enhance security in Moka. A smart CCTV system is being deployed across the city, with a focus on three strategic areas: Bagatelle Mall, Telfair and Les Promenades d’Helvétia. Connected to a 24/7 operational control
room, these smart cameras can
be configured to identify potential problems (trucks dumping waste in the open, cars parked in prohibited areas, etc.) and speed up dedicated patrol response. This should reassure Moka’s residents and daily users.
