sustainable urban planning
Certification is based on four pillars:
Sustainable urban planning:
LEED ND supports the development of sustainable environments by promoting efficient land use as well as pedestrian and green spaces and dense neighbourhoods.
Environmental quality:
It also contributes to developing neighbourhoods with improved quality of life by promoting a mix of uses, efficient rainwater management and improved air quality.
LEED ND, a driving force for urban transformation
Sustainable transport:
The certification promotes environmentally friendly transport options, such as public transport, carpooling, cycle paths and pavements to reduce private car use
and decrease city users’ greenhouse gas emissions.
Resource efficiency:
The design of energy-efficient buildings, water management and efficient use
of materials will enhance the economic sustainability of the neighbourhood.
As you may have realised, LEED ND certification is a major commitment to sustainable urban development. But in practice, what tangible evidence is there to support the effectiveness of the certification system?
   For residents:
Access to green spaces is increased by 1.5 times; the city’s carbon footprint is reduced by 20-40% through sustainable transport; and quality of life is improved with a 15% reduction in air pollution-related illnesses.
For the island:
Annual energy savings reach 25%; water consumption falls by 30%; and the cost of rainwater management is reduced by 40%.
For businesses:
Rental rates in certified neighbourhoods increase by 20%; property demand grows by 15%; and the market appeal of businesses in these neighbourhoods rises by 10%.
For the future:
LEED ND certification has a lasting legacy with 50% waste reduction and a 10% increase in the lifespan of buildings.
LEED ND is more than just a differentiating factor, it is a driving force for urban transformation. Moka has adhered to its principles and best practices to keep Telfair in touch with the realities of urban sustainability. Guided by these principles, the future city centre is gradually emerging with the aim of welcoming its first users in 2024.
