Rezidan: What has become of the artists from the first season?
moka’news
Rezidan was launched in 2022 as a unique artistic residency programme that allows artists to create and develop their work. Three of the participants in the first season seem to have progressed in their practice through this opportunity. They tell us all about it.
MEHA DESAI, A BOOK AND ONGOING PROJECTS!
This photographer revealed herself at the Mokassiens exhibition through her unusual shots. She recalls the wealth of artistic and professional encounters. “I’m thinking in particular of Charlotte d’Hotman, Director of the IMAAYA gallery, and our mentor, Romain Philippon. I’m also very grateful to have shared this creative research project with other photographers, who brought a fresh perspective to my work,” she says of the experience, which was too short for her liking! Meha is therefore continuing her exploration of Moka for a photo book, one of three projects she is currently working on.
AWARD-WINNING CENDRINE BOLARAM
The visual artist is delighted with the unexpected outcomes of this experience. “I went in wanting to create as much as possible, but I came out with so much more than just a few works! It’s a time to explore our
style and reconnect with our identity and our passion. Such encounters with major industry players who benevolently share their experience, but also with other artists in residence who know and live out this calling on a daily basis, are the antidote to often working alone,” she says. Stepping out of her comfort zone has enabled her to win the Samudra Art Prize – Best Painting 2022 Prix Maurice Giroud. A name to remember, for sure!
MEEKSHUMA NAYECK, A FRESH BOOST
According to the visual artist, who needs no introduction, this experience has given a fresh boost
to her career. “I came with an open mind and I wasn’t disappointed! We received invaluable support from Mathieu Pigeot, our Art Manager, and Charlotte d’Hotman, our curator, on this personal discovery journey. I had the opportunity to rethink and reassess my artistic process – something I badly needed – and I’m very grateful for that,” she says. The momentum has helped her gain visibility on the visual arts scene.
This unique programme in Mauritius helps local and international talent grow and enriches the region’s artistic and cultural life, leaving us looking forward to discovering new talent. So, what will season 2 bring?
