With a temperature that is neither
too hot nor too cold, Moka is the ideal place for growing plants, especially roses, for which the city is famous. Harry Seenauth owns three greenhouses
in Moka where these flowering plants take centre stage. Take a peek at his passion.
3 greenhouses
The President of the Mauritius Horticultural Society, Harry Seenauth has had a love for flowers for twenty years. His wife and son share the same infectious passion. Mrs Seenauth
runs the Harry Flowers Centre and
the horticulturist looks after his greenhouses. Harry tends to his plants every day from 6am to 6pm, watering, taking care of and cleaning them to get rid of pests and prevent diseases as well as weeding and adding fertiliser, among others.
He grows several varieties of flowers in the greenhouses, but roses are the stars of the show! They are tricky to
grow and it is essential to protect them from too hot or too cold weather. Harry has no less than 200 different varieties that come in about forty different shades! There is a rose for every taste, be it climbers, bushes, miniature, floribunda or tea roses!
These plants are imported from India, Kenya, Netherlands and South Africa. And Harry takes great pleasure pampering them every day. “What’s my favourite? Sakenn bon dan so fason (each one is beautiful in its own way),
I can’t single one out! It’s like asking me to choose my favourite child!” he says with a laugh.
