Street names steeped in history and memories
involves significant consultation and coordination, and will be completed by 2021.
How are names selected?
In order to align this project with the expectations of residents, Moka Smart City conducted months-long research and also called on a historian. Her expertise and sound advice will (finally) enable Moka to have street names that reflect its heritage.
The different traffic routes, new neighbourhoods and public spaces will be named according to four main principles:
In our first issue, we told you that the new neighbourhoods of the smart city will soon bear street names from the heritage of Mauritius, especially Moka. This project
MAIN ROADS
Main roads will have a name, a date, a concession or place name. Some will be named according to their history (linked to Mauritius or Moka). For example, Rue Bréard in Bagatelle is named after a former concession located a few metres from this street.
SECONDARY ROADS
Secondary roads will have names inspired
by nature, the area’s vegetation or its destinations and activities. There will thus be a Rue des Roses in Helvétia; these plants grow in abundance in Moka. Rue de l’Usine at Vivéa pays tribute to the iconic Mon Desert-Alma sugar factory, which played a key role in the region’s life for 180 years from 1827 to 2007.
PARKS AND PUBLIC PLACES
Parks and public places will be named after iconic sites or illustrious figures. The Moka Park, for instance, will be named after Martial Noël, one of the founders of ENL, an economic driver and the main contributor to the vitality of the region’s social and cultural fabric for almost two centuries.
MAIN STREETS
Finally, main streets will be named after the neighbourhoods in which they are located.
Moka Smart City is planning to place the street name signs at various sites during 2021.
