How to make compost at home?
Compost is to plants what the vitamins in a fresh fruit juice are to you in the morning, i.e. a superfood that makes you stronger! It helps reduce the use of chemicals in your garden and create richer, and more fertile soil. But how do we make compost? Here’s an explanation!
What equipment to use?
Compost is made by turning kitchen and garden waste into natural fertiliser. To begin, you must build or buy a compost bin, the device used for composting. Its size should be adapted to the size of your garden, the number of members in your family and their appetite! It is best
to place it somewhere accessible at the back of your garden. Next you should place your waste inside for composting.
What types of waste can be composed?
It’s very simple: anything that is biodegradable, i.e. that decomposes naturally!
Food waste
Fruit and vegetable peelings
Tea bags
Dry food leftovers (bread, rice, pasta)
Egg shells
Domestic waste
Paper towels, napkins, handkerchiefs
Sawdust and wood shavings
Ashes
Garden waste
Dead leaves
Wilted flowers
Lawn cuttings (in small quantities)
Dried fruit shells

Preparing quality compost
Start by placing a layer of dry material like dead leaves or ashes inside your compost bin, then a layer of wet material such as vegetable peelings, and so
on. Spread and mix the waste with a pitchfork. Let the pile age and make sure to fill your compost bin regularly. Water from time to time and above all, remember to aerate the waste and stir well!
You must wait 4-to-5 months before
you can use your compost. You’ll know
it’s ready when it has an earthy smell
with small black particles full of little red earthworms. You might say “yuck”. That’s what we said too! But keep in mind, little environment soldier, that making compost is the best solution for a less polluted planet. It also makes for great family time!
