And now, Moka!
Did you know that Moka is the country’s third largest planned city? That is something to be proud of! Its origins date back more than fifteen years, when the idea emerged to build a new city in the heart of the island.
Connecting the centre, where many Mauritians live, and Port Louis, where many people work, Moka has drawn inspiration from best-in-class examples abroad to create a modern, sustainable Mauritian city. Like what, for example? Take a stroll through its streets, and open your eyes wide: you will see plenty of offices (which are closer to home than Port Louis, making them more accessible!), green spaces right in front of your house, safe places to catch up with your friends after school, trendy shopping malls that you can visit on weekends and sports and cycling facilities – that’s terrific!
Moka’s future city centre, Telfair will soon host
a number of cultural events (concerts, dance performances, exhibitions, etc.) and you will have all the space that you need along La Promenade for cycling and rollerblading while your parents (and you too, if you want!) are chilling out at a restaurant.
In a nutshell, that is what city planning is all about: a city where everything is taken care of – to make you happy!
Mauritius has prior experience in
urban plannin
Did you know that two planned cities have been developed on our island since the 18th century? Port Louis and Mahébourg were built to meet the requirements of the time. Arranged in a checkerboard structure with distinctive sidewalks, they are organised around a central square where the daily essentials, from markets to social meeting places, were once available. Over time, they continued to expand in an unplanned way. But their city centres are reminiscent of their historical past.
