Let’s start with some key definitions
Urban planning: All the techniques used
to adapt the urban habitat to human requirements, with the aim of enhancing well-being, improving the interaction with others and preserving the environment.
Organic city: A city that develops according to the needs of its residents, but without a specific development plan (designed from the outset). As a result, its architecture is not necessarily very harmonious and its development is not very practical over time.
HOW TO IDENTIFY SUCH A CITY?*
Few or no sidewalks, bike paths or parking spaces Narrow roads leading to dead ends
Residential areas that are situated away from everyday conveniences
A variety of architectural styles on the same street
No real city centre with convenience stores and pleasant public spaces
Very little vegetation and green spaces
* If you have identified at least three criteria from this list when thinking about a city, then it has probably developed organically!
Planned city: It is like a large drawing made by professionals and experts in the field before building a city. Everything is well organised so that people can find what they need and live happily together.
At this stage, you must be thinking: a planned city seems to be much better. And we fully agree with you!

Planning? The only things you have probably ever planned are your school holiday activities and Sunday outings to Bagatelle Mall. So, what has a city got to do with it? And more importantly, why does everyone seem to think that it is always better to plan out a city?
