We reached the starting point of the hike at 7.54am. There was
a sign indicating the marked trails to follow. Among the various trails leading to the summit of Le Pouce, we opted for the most popular one, starting in the village of Petit Verger. Rest assured that you don’t need to be a sports buff to follow this route! It
is however recommended to do the hike in a group and stay
on marked trails. Another important point: it is essential to choose the appropriate footwear. Whether you are sporty or not, take some water, your sun cream and mosquito repellent with you, without forgetting a cap and raincoat in case the weather changes.
As we went along, the track got narrower and became a rocky trail. This passage had an impact on our ankles, but the beauty of the surrounding nature made the hike less strenuous. It
was actually a welcome excuse to take a break now and then! Little butterflies were dancing all around us as we made our way through the guava and palm trees. We took a deep breath before going into the last stage. There was a steep slope ahead and the wind was blowing hard. Caution, concentration and agility were required! At that point, we climbed the mountain using our hands in Spiderman style.
It was worth the effort! From the top of Le Pouce Mountain, we felt like we ruled the world. A sweeping panoramic view of Port Louis, Les Salines, the Ring Road, Coin de Mire and Ile Plate, among others, unfolded before our eyes. The shades of blue of the sea and the sky came together in an amazing sight.
We were enveloped by a feeling of total well-being as we enjoyed the view. The hike had worked up our appetite and we nibbled on a few sandwiches prepared for the occasion. For
the return journey, after ensuring that we had left no garbage behind, we decided to follow the same trail at a quiet and leisurely pace. We got back to our car at 11.30 am and headed off to Bismillah Snack for a well-deserved roti kebab!
