 6 pillars for building a
sustainable city
Making Moka the pioneer of sustainable development in Mauritius is a story in itself! Here are the 6 pillars defined by the smart city to ensure the well-being of residents and our planet.
 1. Making the city a better place
Urban planning is crucial to build an enjoyable, sustainable and balanced city that prioritises the well-being of residents. Drawing on international best practice, Moka has fully integrated this concept into its development from the outset. Taking into account the current and future needs and aspirations of local communities, it makes eco-construction, mixed- use development, preservation
of natural resources and the environment the driving forces of its quality of life.
2. Water, an invaluable resource
Water is at the heart of many urban issues that are taken very seriously by Moka. Notable successes include the provision of free drinking
water from fountains available across the city; rainwater collection and wastewater treatment to
meet public space irrigation requirements; and the use of
natural water drainage and run-off systems to better respond to the impacts of climate change, such as the risk of flooding, etc.
3. Monitoring your energy consumption made easy!
Energy transition is a seamless and thoughtful process in Moka. The city provides residents and businesses with smart meters to monitor and readjust their water and electricity consumption in real time for efficient energy savings.
A solar farm project will also allow Moka to use only renewable energy sources to support residents and users in their daily lives.
4. Alternative mobility
Moka wants us to reconsider how we get around by developing into
a 15-minute city (see Mokazine 3). Soft mobility and carpooling are promoted by implementing means to encourage city users to adopt new habits. The free Commute application makes carpooling easier
