editorial
My fellow citizens,
IAM TRULY HONOURED TO ADDRESS YOU ONCE AGAIN THROUGH MOKAZINE.
This second issue is an opportunity to update you on major developments within the city with the active involvement of the District Council and the town life in general. Just like the first issue, I am sure you will have an interesting read.
I wish to emphasise the surge of solidarity displayed this year by the people of Moka in a totally unprecedented situation caused by COVID-19. In an effort to best serve the needs of our citizens, the Council has worked closely with public authorities, the private sector and NGOs to distribute food in various deprived neighbourhoods and organise blood donations during lockdown. We are very thankful to our frontliners for their
heroic work.
Innovation has always been a priority for the Council. The I-Council concept has become a national project with the use of computer and technological tools to monitor our various developments, projects and activities. We thus have up-to-the-minute data about work-in-progress, including construction work, road maintenance and sewer cleaning. These tools provide an optimum approach to managing the city.
Despite the challenges faced this year, we have continued to look for innovative ways to work alongside Moka Smart City for a brighter
future. One of our upcoming projects is recyclable waste collection by category, and I invite you to find out more by flicking through the pages of your magazine.
The current health and economic crises demand both vigilance and action. I will therefore end by asking our citizens to maintain their active involvement in solidarity efforts and support us in our endeavours. We can work together to create a bright future for Moka!
Enjoy your reading,
Sudhirchandra Soonarane, Chairman, District Council of Moka

Moka, a cohesive city
THIS IS THE SECOND ISSUE OF MOKAZINE, A PUBLICATION INTENDED FOR MOKA SMART CITY AND ITS REGION.
Those of you who read last year’s issue already know that our teams do their utmost to help you discover– or rediscover – the diversity and vibrancy of Moka; we also want our first-time readers to know that our aim is to make this magazine a regular feature.
We are navigating through a challenging year due to the COVID-19-triggered health and economic crisis; during that period, cities worldwide have served as local conduits for sharing national health information. They have stayed in close contact with residents to contain the risk of contagion and encourage new forms of remote relationships while maintaining interaction. This crisis shows the relevance of urban planning, public communication and genuine social connections.
Throughout the lockdown period, Moka Smart City and Moka’mwad have used all means of communication available (websites,
social media, outdoor display networks) to maintain a very close relationship with residents and launched fundraising and distribution efforts. During the MV Wakashio crisis, a large number of people of Moka have shown their commitment by giving their time and energy to build booms to contain the oil spill. We have of course included an article on the citizen mobilisation in this historic moment. Flicking through the pages of this complimentary issue, you will find the latest information on key projects, past and future major urban developments, main events, community life and insights from people of the region. This second issue also includes a special feature on
the city’s sustainable agenda and green initiatives. Environmental awareness should be embedded into the city of tomorrow.
We hope that you'll enjoy the reading.
