Who would have thought it could be possible to make a living from your passion for game design in Mauritius? Or that gamers around the world would play a video game partially made in Moka? Steamroller Studios, a company specialising in animation and video game creation, has chosen Moka to set up shop.

The story began with Jalil Sadool – a Mauritian living in the United States. The animation and video game enthusiast founded his own studio, Steamroller Animation, in Florida… and it has been a resounding success! Steamroller Animation has contributed to several major cinematic projects, including Avatar, and the Narnia Chronicles.

The world of video games nonetheless remains Jalil’s all-consuming creative passion. Longing to share this world with his compatriots, Sadool decided to establish a branch of Steamroller Animation in Mauritius to allow young Mauritian talents to make a living from their passion… This opportunity appealed to a significant number of aspiring game designers, and 11 “Steammates” have joined in the adventure to date.

Curse of the deadwood - the first video game with a Mokassian touch

The sole creation of Steamroller Studios, bringing this game to market has demanded the commitment of both the Mauritian and American teams over no less than eight years! Innovative in its field, the game is described as a unique evolution of the twin-stick genre. The game’s fantasy universe invites players to take control of two main characters who face off against hordes of wooden zombies with the help of their magical arsenal.

Video games, a key aspect of culture

Steamroller Studios has enriched not only Moka’s professional, but above all, its’ cultural landscape. The whimsical side of geek culture has always influenced a wide range of Box Office hits, from Star Wars and Avatar to the DC and Marvel universes. Game design combines technology, creativity, and an overflowing wellspring of imagination to create products that are as unique as they are fun. This innovative philosophy is also found at the heart of the socio-cultural development of Moka, a place where digital artists such as the Steammates can flourish.

This iconic studio has the power to transform a passion into a profession, strengthening Mauritian know-how and international influence. Become part of the adventure yourself; learn more about Steamroller Studios achievements to date!
