The Smart City of Moka is celebrating the National Day with a vibrant celebration of local heritage. Get ready for an unforgettable evening featuring Pie Dan Lo, an award-winning short film, and The Blue Penny, a hit Mauritian thriller, plus plenty more exciting activities! Join us on Tuesday 11th of March at the Telfair Amphitheatre.

As night falls, Telfair La Promenade will light up in the colours of the Mauritian flag. The amphitheatre will become the heart of the celebration, bringing together families and film lovers in a lively, festive atmosphere. While children rediscover traditional chalk-drawn games, spectators will embark on an emotional and cultural journey through captivating stories.

What’s on the Programme?

6:30 pm : Marine Conservation with MMCO

Meet the passionate team behind the Marine Megafauna Conservation Organisation (MMCO), including Hugues Vitry and Svetlana Barteneva. Since 2012, this organisation has been dedicated to protecting large marine species and preserving our ocean’s biodiversity. During the Wakashio oil spill, MMCO played a crucial role in supporting the communities of the South-East, reinforcing its commitment to both people and the environment.

7:00 pm: Pie Dan Lo

Step into the world of Kim Yip Tong and her award-winning short film: Pie Dan Lo, selected for the Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival 2025. This piece, blending animated documentary and art film, revisits one of Mauritius’ greatest ecological disasters: the Wakashio shipwreck. Pie Dan Lo brings to life the inspiring efforts of Mauritians who came together to protect their lagoon.

7:15 pm: The Blue Penny, a Mauritian thriller

With over 4,200 cinema-goers in just eight weeks, Jon Rabaud’s The Blue Penny stands as the biggest local box office success in Mauritius.

The story? Harry, a successful businessman, is celebrating his youngest daughter’s wedding. On this occasion, he gifts her a rare 19th-century Mauritian stamp, the Blue Penny, one of the rarest in the world… But the evening takes a turn when his eldest son arrives with Anna, Harry’s former mistress. As family resentments and unexpected revelations surface, tensions rise, and in the shadows, a terrible act of vengeance unfolds…

  • About Jon Rabaud

    The Mauritian filmmaker directed Cold Blooded, his first short film, during his film studies in Canada.

    He later worked as a casting director for major film productions, including projects for Netflix and TF1, before launching his career as a director. In 2019, Jon became the first Mauritian director selected to participate in the American Film Showcase. In 2020, during the lockdown, he wrote the script for The Blue Penny, which would become his first feature film.
