The Moka’mwad collective’s “Ecology and Environment” Cell, whose mission is to raise environmental awareness among people in the region, gathered more than 350 participants for its very first activity, a Clean-Up and Awareness Day on Sunday 28 October 2018.

Citizen involvement and good spirits

The activity mainly targeted three neighbourhoods: Reduit, Telfair/Railway and Morcellement Surprise. The teams started the clean-up operation with high spirits at 9am while the children were enjoying activities like face painting and upcycling workshops. It’s never too early to start building environmental awareness! Investing time in cleaning up now will enable us to enjoy healthier places in the longer term. Mission accomplished!

The collective sets the agenda for 2019

This approach is consistent with the ENL Group’s vision for Moka and will be further pursued. Other awareness-raising initiatives activities are planned for 2019. Moka’mwad’s objectives for the coming months include reducing landfill areas and revitalising vacant land to provide beautiful green spaces for the community. The programme also comprises activities focused on waste collection and sorting. Additionally, the aim is to provide people with training on the preservation of natural resources. There are many issues to explore and ecology is a major challenge for the years ahead and for our children.

Making things happen together

Moka’mwad is a platform that seeks to unite and involve all stakeholders in Moka. This success is a reward for the efforts deployed by the Cell to organise such an initiative, which required four months of hard work. The inhabitants, active citizens, NGOs in the region and District Council joined together to make things happen and initiate concrete projects to improve the quality of life for the people of Moka.
