Moka Smart City’s initiative aims towards genuine ecological advancement, through the implementation of a new model of sustainable development.
This new model of sustainable development is based mainly on energy saving and wastewater recycling, and bearing the LEED NEIBORHOOD-DEVELOPMENT certificate. So as to encourage its inhabitants to practice waste sorting and accompany them through this new set of green procedures, the Smart City has decided to make recycling bins mandatory in both its residential and business areas.
If you wish to make a further effort in reducing your domestic waste, here are seven additional ideas:
- Say goodbye to plastic: grocery shopping, lunch boxes, water bottles, your children’s birthday party… it is time to eliminate plastic from our daily lives. Opt instead for such alternatives as tote bags, real cutlery, a water filter at home, etc.
- Opt for bulk shopping: even though it will take a little bit of dedication, it is possible to practice bulk grocery shopping in Mauritius. Explore local markets instead of supermarkets. In the Moka market, for instance, you will easily find foodstuff sold by the kilo. Don’t forget to bring your wicker basket!
- Think compost: don’t throw your organic waste in the bin but in a separate container intended for this use. You will obtain rich and fertile compost matter that will benefit your plants and your homegrown vegetables.
- Make your own household products: forget all the ads trying to sell you countless miracle tools. A quick web search will give you numerous easily doable ideas instead, using products such as baking soda, white vinegar, or essential oils.
- Use natural fibers: eliminate kitchen wipes, plastic and aluminum foil from your house and choose natural fibers. You can cover your food with a kitchen towel for instance, and use a washable and reusable cloth wipe for cleaning.
- Give objects a second life: it’s time to move on from the throwaway era and into a sustainable one. Don’t hesitate to recycle jam jars as spice containers, to fix your own fridge or simply to give away the things you don’t use anymore.
- Become an environmentally-responsible consumer: choose products with limited packaging, buy only what you really need without getting carried away by mall-related euphoria, buy local and seasonal products when possible… etc.
