Implement sustainable development strategy with respect to ecology – such is the long-term objective fostered by Moka Smart City.
According to this vision, and in synch with the World Environment Day, Moka’s team and local authorities join forces to take stock of the situation during a site visit in the different neighbourhoods.
Their common objective is to define key actions to raise awareness among Mokassians about their impacts and role towards the environment by encouraging them to adopt a set of daily eco-friendly habits.
While waiting to hear more about this long-term project, here are 6 daily acts that can make a difference:
1. Save water and electricity: turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or doing the dishes, turn off the lights when leaving a room, refrain from washing your car during draughts… such are a few of daily changes that can help reduce our environmental footprint. Think about it!
2. Reduce domestic waste: sort your waste, make your own household products, go bulk-shopping, turn your organic waste into compost and from there into plant fertilizer… there are numerous solutions towards adopting a waste-free life. It’s up to you with which you start!
3. Opt for car sharing solutions: very popular abroad (everyone’s heard of “blablacar”), the concept of car sharing is still off to a slow start in Mauritius. Be the one to change things and put the idea in practice, or develop a car-sharing app! This would allow a reduction in both traffic issues and CO2 emissions.
4. Use a pocket ashtray: cigarette butts are too often found in cities, around bus stops, or, worse still, on our beaches! Smokers, think about investing in a pocket ashtray that you can take everywhere with you. 72 billion cigarette butts are thrown away each year!
5. Be a responsible consumer: don’t fall into the trap of overconsumption – here’s another key move to ensure a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Buy and consume only what you can’t do without and ask yourself before each purchase: “Do I really need this?”. You can of course treat yourself once in a while.
6. Set an example: we’ll never have enough of Gandhi’s famous quote: “Be the change you want to see in the world”. Don’t worry about what others are doing but adopt eco-friendly actions in your daily life, at your own pace, and you’ll find yourself influencing the people around you without even meaning to.
