Reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions, walking or cycling to work, living in a refreshing environment…

Urban mobility is an essential aspect of the development of Moka Smart City, which aims to provide a pleasant environment for people residing and working in the area. Discover seven projects that are already or will soon be in operation in Moka:

1. Promoting soft mobility

A 10km network of cycle and pedestrian paths is already operational in Moka. You can make your way to the beautiful Telfair Amphitheatre, where students meet at lunchtime, walkers come to do some stretching and the people of Moka can enjoy complimentary daily sports activities. Over time, this network will be extended to the entire city!

2. Connecting all neighbourhoods through a pedestrian avenue

La Promenade currently connects the Helvétia and Telfair neighbourhoods. The ultimate aim of the project is to connect the entire smart city, from L’Avenir to Telfair, by crossing a large public park. In a second phase, the avenue will be lined with motorised roads, like a Mauritian-style Champs Élysées!

3. Providing shaded and well-lit sidewalks

This key aspect of safety and leisure has already been taken care of to give the people of Moka the peace of mind to safely jog or walk their dogs. In the future, all new streetlights in Moka Smart City will be powered by photovoltaic energy. Whats more, during the day, the sidewalks invite you to walk under the shade of trees when going out to lunch.

4. Introducing Metro Express service

Three Metro Express stations will be available in Moka! Helvétia, Telfair and Saint Pierre will each have their own stop. This means of transport will enable travellers to save time and reduce their environmental impact by leaving their car at home.

5. Operating a bike-sharing scheme

You have probably heard of the Vélib’ system in Paris? Cyclists can hire a bike from a station in the city and drop it off at any other station close to their destination. This convenient service is currently being considered by the smart city, with the aim to implement the project in 2024.

6. Improving traffic flow

Urban mobility also entails constantly improving road connectivity. The completion of changes to the Verdun interchange and the new Verdun Bypass Road are already improving access in and out of Moka. Traffic within and around the region will also be further improved in 2024 through connecting the new Verdun interchange connecting the Saint Pierre Bypass Road with the M3 motorway and the new roundabout to the south of Vivéa Business Park with the St Pierre Bypass Road as well as a host of other road infrastructure developments underway in the region.

7. Making parking easier

Dedicated parking areas have been created to address an ongoing issue in Mauritian towns. Motorists find it difficult to park and defining sufficient parking spaces is an integral part of sensible urban planning.
