Technology is undoubtedly the key component in the Smart City concept. Sneid Ramasawmy, Head of Technology at Moka Smart City, explains how this invaluable tool is revolutionising everyday life and supporting sustainable development.

What are the practical applications of technology in a Smart City?

One of the aims of Moka Smart City is to use technology as a vehicle to promote interaction between the city’s managers and its current citizens and future residents. One example might involve a cleverly developed application that facilitates the process of validating development plans in accordance with existing specifications. It also includes managing customer requests through an interactive and optimised service.

Another area to consider is the deployment of smart devices that can inform property owners about their consumption and carbon footprint to raise awareness. These are technological solutions that serve to improve the quality of life of Moka’s citizens and commuters by optimising the efficiency and safety of the city’s operations, and facilitate thoughtful planning that promotes sustainable development.

Can you tell us about your work in developing technology in Moka?

My work varies depending on the projects I’m involved in, ranging from designing software, computer systems and applications to deploying databases and setting up computer and telecommunications networks. The development of mobile networks (5G) is essential for a smart city. I work closely with other professionals and consulting firm, as well as local authorities to achieve this.

Tell us about the 6 major areas of technology in Moka and how they help both individuals and businesses?

Connectivity

Our flagship project in this area is the installation of a redundant fibre optic network to provide uninterrupted access to high-speed internet for businesses looking to set up in Moka. As mentioned before, a strong mobile network like 5G is crucial. Installing this network also means that businesses can choose between several internet providers.

Energy consumption

Dedicated remotely–controlled systems allows to manage the energy consumption of buildings and houses, while optimising the lighting of public spaces. Also, some of the public lighting now uses solar energy, which reduces operating costs and minimises environmental impact.

The Internet of Things (IoT)

This is a new way of using technology to improve the quality of life of residents, mostly via sensors that collect a range of data in real time, from energy and water consumption to air quality, noise levels and the fill rate of waste sorting bins, among other things. The water treatment plant will also be equipped with sensors to measure the amount of water saved and automate operations . Digital tools then interpret and disseminate the data, which can be used to inform the decision-making processes of individuals and businesses alike.

Mobility

This area looks at transport efficiency, road design and traffic management with a goal of promoting alternative technologies, such as electric scooters and bicycles, and considers related issues such as the availability of car parks.

Safety

We deploy intelligent security systems based on artificial intelligence for surveillance purposes. This assists law enforcement agencies in their work and optimises their interventions. As well as surveillance cameras, these systems also include functions for detecting illegal parking.

Citizen interaction

We plan to make a mobile application available to residents that will facilitate access to information on public services and activities in the city.
