Following the confirmation of cases of COVID-19 in Mauritius, Moka Smart City has immediately embarked on an awareness campaign aimed at people living and working in the region. It is our duty as citizens and business organisations to take all necessary measures. Here are the right things to do to curb its spread.

In recent weeks, Moka Smart City has committed to implementing various measures to inform and raise the awareness of the public; the aim now is to help minimise the spread of the virus:

  • All events hosted by Moka and the Moka’mwad collective cancelled since a week

It is essential to restrict public gatherings and Moka Smart City as well as the Moka’mwad collective have cancelled all upcoming events since Monday 16 March 2020, including the free twice-weekly Zumba classes at the Telfair amphitheatre and the Zumba Night Out scheduled for 27 March. To avoid any risk, the Moka Street Food Festival scheduled for 30 May has also been cancelled.

Moreover, various commitments have been made with regard to sport, a group activity that involves physical contact. Initially scheduled from 18 April to 3 May, the Moka Tennis Open has been cancelled. Additionally, Moka Smart City’s multisport club, Moka Rangers Sports Club has suspended group training and competitions for all its 9 disciplines from 20 March. Finally, Synergy Sport & Wellness Institute in Helvetia will be closed to members and the public until further notice. However, fitness videos will be available on the centre’s Facebook page in the coming days to enable its members and the Mauritian people to continue to work out from home.

Despite the difficulty of such decisions – even before the government announcement on total population lockdown – the health of the people of the region remains the priority. For that reason, Moka has spared no measure: “We are at a critical time and we are sick at heart. Moka Smart City has had to make tough decisions but we believe that they can help stop the spread of COVID-19. We would like to thank the citizens of Moka, people living in the region and our partners for their understanding; we look forward to resuming all the beautiful projects in Moka that unite us in our day-to-day lives. Before we get there, we feel that it is our duty to run an awareness campaign in order to give everyone the opportunity to slow the spread of the virus,” says the General Manager of Moka Smart City, Samuel de Gersigny.

  • Impending launch of an awareness campaign

Moka Smart City and the Moka’mwad collective are launching an awareness campaign to encourage everyone to behave in a civic and responsible manner. The campaign will be run across social media (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn) and soon on billboards in Moka to indicate measures necessary to limit the risk of propagation of COVID-19: the right steps to take, emergency measures and the latest official information. Follow Moka Smart City on social media to stay updated.

  • National lockdown – government measures

On Thursday 19 March 2020, the Cabinet has decided to impose a national lockdown for at least two weeks from the next day in order to minimise contacts and movements across the country.

We must all demonstrate good citizenship by complying with the national lockdown and doing everything we can to avoid spreading the virus. We must be brave in these challenging times and avoid giving in to panic.

  • Stay at home and minimise your movements except in case of emergency.
  • Get your basic necessities from nearby shops and avoid panic buying.
  • Be vigilant while shopping by staying at least one metre away from each other in queues and avoiding fiddling with products.

Failure to observe the relevant instructions and moving around without a valid reason entail a fine of up to Rs 1,000 and imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months under the Quarantine Act and Public Health Act.
