The first sterilisation campaign carried out in Moka Smart City has been a real success. A full day of identification and awareness-raising took place on 12 June 2022, with the participation of some thirty volunteers to help Steriliz ou Zanimo in their work. The campaign itself was held at Telfair Village on 22 July and the Energym premises were let by the owner at a reduced price.

Reflecting on the event, the vice-president of the association, Magali Luigi says, “We are very satisfied with the result: a total of 35 animals have been spayed. The owners we met in June came in large numbers to have their pets sterilised, and everything went well. I would like to thank once again the vets from the All Life Matters Animal Sanctuary for their exceptional work and kindness, but also Twins Tattoo, who tattooed the spayed dogs to help identify them more easily.”

This success has led to the launch of a new campaign sponsored by Moka Smart City in September. An identification and awareness-raising activity will again be held prior to the event. “Before meeting us, people are sometimes reluctant to have their dogs sterilised: they are afraid of the risks associated with the procedure or anaesthesia, or prefer to avoid the cost of the spaying procedure. That is why our work with All Life Matters is critical: first, we explain the whole procedure and reassure the owners. Their vets also use a special technique to ensure that the procedure has the least possible impact on the animal, and that it recovers very quickly. It’s free of charge, quick, painless and it makes a real long-term difference for our country.”

A scourge that we must all fight

Did you know that over 50% of stray dogs have an owner? Accordingly, the relevant families should be made aware of the importance of sterilisation! This permanent solution allows for better birth control to reduce the number of dogs on our streets. Thus, fewer accidents would occur and the safety and well-being of city users – and animals – would be enhanced.

This scourge is affecting everyone’s life in Moka: out of kindness, many people feed these stray dogs, which leads to their proliferation. They are everywhere, including at Vivéa Business Park and around construction sites! Their high number increases their aggressiveness, putting everyone at risk.

“We want to create synergies that will make life easier for the residents and users of Moka. This sterilisation campaign is part of this ongoing effort: we believe that spaying is a necessary service that becomes a realistic option when it is brought closer to people’s lives, in places they visit and use daily. We hope this will encourage more such events,” says Moka Smart City’s Operations Manager, Léopold Le Guen, about the city’s commitment to sponsor this initiative
