Moka Rangers Sports Club has been expanding its range of sport disciplines every year since its foundation in 2015. Running is in the starting blocks for 2022 with new categories and dynamic coaches! Here’s an update from Moka Rangers’ Head of Running, Percy Driver.

Democratising running

Running is a sport that has been around for a long time but it was mainly aimed at champions and elite athletes wearing Moka Rangers colours. “We wanted to change this and make running inclusive by enabling champions, beginners and occasional runners alike to practise their sport within the same club,” says Percy Driver, who joined the Moka Rangers team in early 2021.

What does the sports club have in store for running enthusiasts? Two training sessions will be led by one of the club’s three coaches every Tuesday and Thursday. They include muscle training, running, interval training – alternating intensive routines like sprint training and recovery time – or training sessions at Maryse Justin Stadium. The sessions follow one another, but are not the same!

A new structure is also being put in place this year with the introduction of three new training categories to meet the needs of all participants. The Trail category is open to runners who want to train for the various scheduled races on the calendar. There will be mountain sessions for beginners who wish to improve and seasoned runners, for example.

The Cross/Road Running category offers training for all levels with a focus on half-marathon, marathon and cross-country league events. Flat and faster routes will therefore be preferred.

Finally, the Casual Runners category is for beginners who would like to engage in running. Under the guidance of Moka Rangers coaches, they will first learn to run, breathe – but also not to get injured!

“Our coaches are multi-skilled, each with their own speciality. They share their diverse knowledge and experiences to enable our runners to improve their performance,” says Percy Driver. The club intends to go further this year by seeking out young talent from 15 years old in order to mentor them and help them get started.
