Quench your thirst with the drinking fountains in Moka!

Moka Smart City is raising its profile as a sustainable city and taking another step towards environmental responsibility with the installation of free drinking water fountains for everyone to use! Let us tell you a little more about it.

Free water for everyone, everywhere!

Moka has launched yet another smart initiative! Since February 2021, the city is equipped with water fountains to enhance the daily comfort of residents and users while encouraging them to reduce their use of plastic bottles. There are now four drinking fountains across the city, in high-traffic areas like the Helvétia crossroads, the Telfair Amphitheatre, La Place de l'Avenir and Telfair Square. Other fontains will be available in more neighbourhoods of the city, and ultimately even in the future Moka Park. Moka Smart City has worked with a local company, Zilo Water to bring this project to life. The system implemented consists of a prefilter and an active charcoal filter to guarantee perfect drinking water quality. For smooth operation of the fountains, the company carries out regular checks to maintain its quality standards – and provide fresh, clean water for everyone! Finally, to measure the success of these first four fountains, smart meters have recently been installed in order to monitor consumption. It will soon be possible to calculate the number of plastic bottles saved over a given period. Reusable insulated water bottles are also available for sale at the ReStore, to encourage the use of the city's water fountains and reduce the use of single use plastic.

Smart initiatives for a more sustainable Moka

“This is another step in our fight against PET plastic bottles. We already collect a certain amount of them through our waste sorting bins located throughout the city for recycling and preventing them from ending up in the landfill. The fountains will enable people to use metal flasks, for example, which maintain the water’s temperature while being reusable,” says the smart city’s Land & Business Development Manager, Olaf Boullé, to explain the reasons behind the decision to install these public fountains.

Moka Smart City is strongly committed to sustainable development through initiatives like waste sorting bins, incentives to promote soft mobility, the introduction of green energy and more recently, these public drinking water fountains. The aim is to have the lowest possible environmental footprint through a whole range of smart initiatives – to chart a better future for everyone!
